Five Little Ducks

Finally we have managed to get some ducks to hatch. They came out between Christmas and New Year. They are very shy and have been hard to get a photo of. They run away whenever I get near by.
They are very cute. One of them is bright yellow. It is hard to believe how quickly they are growing, much faster than the chickens or turkeys in their first weeks. They are in the garden at the moment and i will leave them there unless they become destructive.

Ducklings are so cute. I'm currently looking for a drake for my Indian Runners.

Do you guys grow the ducks for meat, or just eggs?

Well we do plan to eat some of them, I was looking at them this morning and thinking that might be a bit of a challenge as they are so cute!

Despite the fact that several of the turkeys and hens are not laying, as they are broody the, there seem to be more than ever. Certainly more than two people can eat. Peter generally takes them to work and either sells them or gives them away. The turkey ones have not been that popular though. Today he said someone asked him for more turkey eggs as they had made an omelet with them and it was the best they have ever made. I find they rise up really well in omelets and Frittatas. I plan a big cooking evening sometime this week to turn the eggs into little herb quiches to put in the freezer for over the holidays when we will have a house full.

Lotions and Potions

I started to make my own face cream a few months ago. I  no longer want to pay the amount that a  nice face cream costs and I found the cheaper ones to be quite horrible. I happened upon a recipe that made me realise that face cream is mostly water! I gave that cream a try and it was quite nice, Just a quarter of a cup of oil, emulsifying wax and water. This time I thought I could improve on this so heated together 1/4 cup of apricot kernel oil, Almond oil, Avocado Oil, that is a total of 1/4 cup so just a little bit of each, heat that with 13 gram of emulsifying wax, warm a cup of water. When water and oil reach  45 degrees, mix them together, add a tsp of vitamin e oil and a few drops of Lavender oil. Stir occasionally  until cool and then poor into a container.
